Built in Hong Kong, Built for Better

Most of us assume that buying a well-known brand means buying quality. That was the assumption our founder lived by too — reaching for Japanese and Korean gel polish brands because they had the reputation, the packaging, and the prestige. Then came a skin reaction that no one should have to deal with after a simple manicure. That reaction changed everything. It also raised a question that turned out to have a surprising answer: why is there not a single nail polish brand in Hong Kong that we can truly call our own?

It Started With a Reaction
For years, our founder used popular Japanese and Korean gel polish brands. They were well-marketed, widely trusted, and easy to find. But after using one, her skin reacted — and it made her stop and think.

She started looking into what was actually in these products. What she found was unsettling: many celebrated brands had never been put through rigorous safety certification. Consumers were trusting a name, not a standard. And across the entire Hong Kong nail polish market, every product on the shelf was an import. There was not a single local brand built with Hong Kong customers in mind, and certainly none holding themselves accountable to any safety benchmark.

BEHOLD Was Born — 2021

In 2021, BEHOLD was founded. The name is intentional — to behold something means to see it clearly, to pay attention, to recognise that it matters. We wanted to build a brand that was worth noticing: one that stood for something real, not just a pretty bottle.

From day one, two principles were set and never negotiated:

Safety certification is non-negotiable. Having experienced a reaction firsthand, our founder knew that safety could not be an afterthought or a marketing claim — it had to be verified, documented, and maintained. No product leaves BEHOLD without meeting that bar.

Affordability is a commitment, not a compromise. Safe nail products should not be reserved for people with large budgets. We priced BEHOLD at HK$88 because we believe quality and accessibility can — and should — go hand in hand.

These two principles have not changed since the first day we opened our doors.

In 2022, the Hong Kong Consumer Council tested 25 gel nail polishes sold in the market. The results were alarming: nearly 70% tested positive for carcinogenic substances — many of them from well-known imported brands.

BEHOLD, a Hong Kong local brand founded just the year before, received a five-star rating — the only local brand to do so. And at HK$88, BEHOLD was the most affordable product among all five-star brands in the test.

This was not a lucky result. It was the outcome of a decision made on day one: that safety would always come first. The Consumer Council's findings simply confirmed, in black and white, what we had been committed to all along.

What We Believe
．Safety should never be a luxury. Every BEHOLD product is safety-certified before it reaches you. That is the baseline, not a bonus.
．Local can be better than imported. Hong Kong is capable of producing world-class products. BEHOLD is proof of that.
．Beauty should not come at the cost of health. A manicure is meant to be a pleasure, not a risk. We exist to make sure those two things are never in conflict.
．Affordable pricing is a principle. Good quality should belong to everyone, not just those who can pay a premium for it.
